If you missed seeing the documentary Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin & the Farm Midwives at DOC NYC or LAFF this year, it will be screened in communities across the states and in different cities internationally throughout the next couple of months. Their next stop is Nashville, TN, tomorrow 12/8/12 at the Scarritt-Bennett Center. Details here.

On the other coast, the LA EIGAFEST 2012 will be showcasing recent Japanese Cinema at the Eygptian Theater in Hollywood, CA. The full slate has just been announced and detailed on the EigaFest’s website.

NOLASynchroniCITY film series - featuring the extraordinary culture of New Orleans and Louisiana heritage - kicked off on Sunday, December 2. The first screening was of the late filmmaker Stevenson Palfi’s award-winning 1982 documentary Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together.

In stark contrast to the southern soul of the NOLASynchroniCITY fest, the icy Anchorage International Film Festival also kicked off this weekend. For the next week the 12th annual Anchorage International Film Festival will present more than 100 selections from more than 20 countries. This year’s AIFF started with an opening night gala and the Alaska premiere of Deadfall, the latest from Oscar award-winning director Stefan Ruzowitzky.

With the end of another year approaching, TIME magazine unveiled its “People’s Choice”candidates for the Person of the Year, which includes a wide range of newsmakers like Chinese dissident and artist Ai Weiwei, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (top row), 50 Shades of Greyauthor E.L. James, Undocumented Immigrants and Korean singer PSY (middle row), as well as Australian skydiver Felix Baumgartner, The Higgs Boson Particle and Mars Curiosity Rover (bottom row) among many others. An Escape From Sex Slavery:

She remembers a home that looked fancy on the outside but ominous on the inside, a dark maze of bare chambers. She remembers the parade of men, one after the other, day by day, forcing her to have sex. She remembers contemplating death. She wasn’t yet 10 years old.

Her name is Sreypich Loch, and she was a slave in a Cambodian brothel. If she refused sex, she says, she would be beaten, shocked with an electric cord, denied food and water. “What else could I do?” she asks.

Loch, now around 20 years old, managed to escape that world and works today to rescue other girls. She helps grab them out of brothels, and she hosts a radio show in Phnom Penh, giving the girls a forum for their stories. It’s a groundbreaking effort for a young woman and former sex slave in this male-dominated society.

She hopes that by talking about her past, she will help people understand that slavery is alive and well. When people “hear the voice of the survivor,” she says on a recent visit to New York City, “we can help others.”
